Hi all,

I haven't posted in a long time but in the last few days one of my rats, Baby, looks to have very sore eyes that aren't clearing up. I thought it was normal porpyhrin and would disappear on it's own accord but no such look and now a lump has emerged on the side of her face very suddenly. She lost vision a good few months ago more or less but knows her way around their home. She looks awful but is in good spirits and eating etc. Will be going to the vet anyway but any thoughts/opinions/help would be appreciated so I know what to expect. She'll be 3 in March 2012. Our other rat is fine but she is considerably younger. I'm worried that cleaning off the bits of crust at the moment will hurt more than it will hinder so not sure what to do right now Sad Sad: (

Oh dear that does look sore. Since it popped up so quickly I would say its an abscess. A course of antibiotics will be needed. How do her teeth look?
I know with abscesses they usually get hard and a bit crusty before bursting and you can help speed that up by applying a warm saline compress to the area several times a day. When the abscess finally bursts, expect to see sticky, green pus. Since its right at her eye I'm not sure if thats safe to do though. A trip to the vets will help you figure out your options.
Sorry I'm not more help but I haven't experinced this kind of lump before. I hope your girl feels better soon Smile

Thanks for your reply. Really hope it's an abcess I was worried with her age and all it could be a tumour and was kind of preparing myself for the worst Sad Her teeth haven't been great lately despite having things and pasta to chew, we have had to clip them slightly from time to time. We're going to the vet anyway so paws crossed.

It is possible that it's a tumour - she needs to see the vet who will be better able to advise - but in any case it does look nasty Sad good luck.

Thanks, I know its still possible. Sad I was convinced last night that that was what it was and only this morning did abcesses or cysts occur to me. We have an appointment with the vet for later on. Please god she will be ok, she's still eating lots and happy.

Hope all will be well for Baby and she will receive the right treatment. It is so important to give them the very best, even in old age after they have given us so much pleasure, fun and laughter during their short lives. The shortness of their lives makes is all the more unbearable, expecially when they are sick. Good luck, Steve

we went to the vet last night and it turned out to be an abcess which was lanced and green pus drained out immediately. she was also given fluids by needle and we were given antib's for 12 days which were due to commence this evening however ive just gotten home and she can't seem to move, when she tries she has to drag herself. i am worried she may have had a stroke and all the local vets i've called have been no help despite me saying that and won't even offer to see us so we will now have to drive to our vet who is at least 45 minutes away and i am worried she's in pain. GRRRRRRR

So sorry to hear about your loss, the wonderful thing is that you did all you could for Baby, just shows you, the more we do for them, the more we love them, the more they become part of us and so the greater we feel their loss. Steve
