Hi everyone!

Hi there!
My name is Siofradh and I'm the proud owner of two female ratties, Bea and Olive. They're only 8 weeks old, just got them last week from a petshop (which i defo won't be doing again due to them being poorly socialised and nervous) and the woman who sold them to me didn't tell me what breed they are. Maybe you guys can help me out on this From having a browse through all the different breeds of rats I'm thinking they're either Russian Silver or Russian Blue. Will post a picture so you's can judge for yourselves as soon as I figure out how! These are my first rats so if anyone has any tips or treats in particular that their rats enjoy, i'd love to know!

I cant help you with the varieties but they are stunning little girls .. cant wait to see more of them

They do look like they may be Russian Silver - but it's very hard to tell from that photo - can you get a good shot with a flash fired? That sometimes helps! Where exactly were they from? It's a shame that petshops have potentially started getting Russian Silvers - the ones that are not bred for health can frequently have very short life spans and be quite sick. I'm sure yours will be OK though. They're rather sweet looking!

Welcome your girls are just gorgeous Hopefully you'll find this forum as good a resource as i have,feel free to ask lots of questions and post more pics of your lovely little ones!i had a similar first experience with my ratties,but we learn from our mistakes and this forum is great for considering future ratties,either rescue or responsibly bred..you're going to have so much fun getting to know your girls

Zoundz - I got them from petmania in carlow town, i was pretty surprised myself to see them im there! i'll defo try to get more photos in the next few days.
smokierat - Yes I'd love to take in some rescues. If there's any female rats that need homes, let me know! Only have one cage atm but hopefully in the next while I'll be getting a critter nation so can take in boys then!

Pet mania seems to be getting an influx of unusual varieties lately. There are black berkshires and a few roans etc. in the kilkenny petmania. I asked to hold the the berkies the last time I was in and the girl told me their rats come from somewhere called Johns Reptiles and Rodents in England.
Siofradh are you from Carlow yourself? I lived there for years (my mum still does) just around the corner from petmania

i actually never noticed any rats in petmania before until i started thinking of getting some myself.. i don't know whether it's cos i didn't notice them or they only have them occasionally... i'll ask them next time i'm in there! i actually live just around the corner from petmania also! I'm originally from dublin tho, me and my mum moved down in september. small world eh!

Small world indeed! I'm originally from Dublin but moved to Carlow with my mum when I was younger too haha.. are we related somehow??

Wow you'd think so haha! Carlow's very different from the big smoke! I still can't believe how quiet it is down here

You can say that again! It took me ages to get used to the place. Do you know many people in Carlow? It took me ages to meet people my age but I did a PLC and met loads of them. I moved to Kilkenny about 2 years ago but I visit my mum often

I'm from Dublin 7 I know a few people, one of my closest friends moved down here a few years back and we kept in contact. Other than that, not many people.
