Wanted - male to move in with Sheldon
I lost Leonard, one of my boys last week - he developed a very nasty chest infection and despite vet and Baytril he died very quickly. I would like to get a male to keep the other guy company and ideally don't want a kitten (Sheldon is five months old). If anyone is looking to rehome let me know - your rat will be moving to a good home where he will be loved and handled regularly. I'm based in Galway but can travel if necessary.

I'm so sorry to hear you lost Leonard (I love big bang theory!!) ):
I really hope you find some company for him soon & will keep a look out for you.

Re: Wanted - male to move in with Sheldon
I know a lot of people don't like using these sorts of websites and it seems these guys were bred by some backyard breeder, so perhaps buying one isn't a good option. And I know you said you don't want kittens, BUT, I had a look on donedeal and there is someone with babies (47 days ago..) http://www.donedeal.co.uk/for-sale/otheranimals/2386444
I'd also suggest if you were to go down this route that you get 2 so they have eachother when Sheldon goes.
I was actually looking there because sometimes people advertise their lone pets there. Maybe if you keep an eye out one will pop up.
Hope this is some sort of help.
I'm not encouraging unethical breeders, but I just hate the thought of that wee man being on his own ):
Or perhaps someone near you would be willing to lend/give you a boy.

I wouldn't advise that 'breeder' - if you really must, then you must - but I strongly advise hanging on for rescues than supporting people who have no idea sticking two rats together and calling themselves a breeder. People like that make my blood boil!

I have no intention of buying from a Donedeal ad when there is every likelihood of a post-christmas rescue or abandoned rat needing a good home.
I bought gerbils from a 'breeder' before and it took ages to tame and socialise them. I'd say they were completely inbred and never handled as pups.
Sheldon was wandering up the hall when I came home, eating a piece of roast chicken and heading back to his cage with it. We all miss Leonard though.

'rare agouti A gene that gives him a lovely blue/grey colour'? I don't claim to be a breeding expert but that kitten looks black to me. also isn't agouti dominant?

It was more the picture with the rat drinking from a can of beer that put me off...

The advert was posted yesterday on another thread, and everything about it makes my blood boil. The person involved is obviously a complete and absolute muppet.

Re: Wanted - male to move in with Sheldon
I bought at my Dorothy from that breeder last week!
The father rat was actually a very friendly big rat, but I was told their mother had recently died. Dorothy is a sweet little thing, but hasn't been well handled and is very small compared with Blanche. Undecided as to whether the size difference is down to Dorothy having been raised underfed OR my Blanche being overweight!
Would have preferred to rescue a rat as well, but I was in the same position as you. I lost one of my 2 girls and Blanche was lonely without her sister. She wasn't handling it well at all. She became ill, sneezy and withdrawn, she got bald patches on her body and was losing condition. I searched high and low for a rescue rat or rat from reputable breeder but none were available and I hated seeing Blanche so unhappy.
Now I have a second rat again, its been better. Currently they are both curled up in their bed cuddling and Blanche seems much happier.

Re: Wanted - male to move in with Sheldon
Mh. Apologies for the post then, obv a bad idea..
However, I have given my rats beer before and one in particular has a taste for wine. All in moderation.
In fact, i've heard that rats, being the clever furries that they are, will drink until they point they get drunk, and then drink no more.
But anyway, this is probably going to open a whole other can of worms.

It's obviously hardly advised but yes, they do like alcohol... so it should be kept out of their reach!

Yeah, the person who had him reckoned he was a year old - I'd say more like two. He is very small and timid - he's been exploring the kitchen, eating spiders and TUC crackers. I must get some Ivermectin tomorrow and dose everyone just in case...

Once again, I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs probably, and being rather impertinent - but forgive me, I think only of the rats! Are you 100% sure he's male?
He does look old bless him

How about now...
They are getting on ok - a bit of pushing and shoving but otherwise fine
Keeping Sheldon out of the eggs is always a challenge. He loves a little boiled egg!Zoundz wrote:teaching my granny to suck eggs:)

Aw, it's great to see Drake went to a good home! Glad you're enjoying him (and would love to know what name you give him!
I hope he's getting along with Sheldon alright, though he always was a sweetheart for me. If there are any problems please let me know, I'll gladly pass you along some of the younger rats for free if you're around Dublin again.

Hey Babs, you found this place after all - nice folk here! He is stuck with Baldrick - everyone thought it suited him better than anything from Big Bang Theory. He is settling in well, he is a lovely little guy with a very gentle personality and impeccible manners!! He's not much for exploring - I keep letting him out in the kitchen only to find him climbing my leg to get back into my hoodie pocket.
Thanks again,
David.

Re: Wanted - male to move in with Sheldon
I made it my mission to search it out after hearing about it
Baldrick is brilliant, he's such a little business man sorta rat it does suit him! He never was as curious as the others - one of the male dumbo hooded rats I have is supposedly his brother, according to the lady I adopted them from, and so he was the more outgoing one while Baldrick just lingered behind. But she did also tell me they were six months old, so I'm not sure she really was a reliable source because I'm not too sure, but they can't be less than a year. They seem rather old and slow moving to me, especially compared to the younger boy I keep in with them.
No problem, thanks for posting the pictures and everything, I was really sad to part with him but now I'm glad he's gone to a home where he can have more one-on-one attention!
