Looking for a young girl
Hi,
We have a 9 week old rat baby girl and I'm having real trouble finding a friend for her.
Anyone know of any girls looking for homes? Must be reasonably young, social and used to being handled.
My 14yr old is the main carer but I supervise and have kept rats before. ( a loooooong time ago)
Or if anyone has knows a breeder with a litter?
In the south east but can travel reasonable distance.

Re: Looking for a young girl
zoundz is the only breeder I'd recommend over in Ireland, she's based in Cork and has recently had a litter, so I'd definitely pm her, but I definitely wouldn't count on getting some from the latest litter, that's the only thing. If you're really desperate you should obviously post up an add here asking for rescues but they aren't as plentiful as the cat or dog kind, obviously. As a last resort I'd maybe try donedeal though you obviously can't guarantee health or temperament of the animals you're getting. I would definitely try and stay away from petshops though. Good luck!

Re: Looking for a young girl
I already emailed Zoundz, thats how I found my way here.
Didn't realize how few people keep rats here. We love them, just sorry I waited so long between rats!

Yes unfortunately, as I said in e-mail, we won't have anything for a couple of months at least

A possible idea:
There were 4 females in the pets at home adoption centre in Bangor a few weeks ago when I was in (I'm rarely there, so you'd need to call and see if they got homes yet). They were returned for some reason and will only be rehomed as a 4 or in pairs but, so you'd have to be willing to take 2 at least.
Or this: http://www.donedeal.co.uk/for-sale/exoticpets/3277873 (I wanna email but there's no e-mail, phone only)

PS. I'd prob not offer money for any of the ones I've posted as they are most likely back-yard breeders, but if the person is genuinely looking to rehome the rat they may ask for a small amount to make sure they aren't going as snake food.

Re: Looking for a young girl
Hrm, I got mine from there. The day I went they said they'd sold a pair earlier that day and thought they had none left, then checked out the back and my two little girls were in a cage.
Where they little/young rats?
The fact one of mine is sick could be a reason as to why they were returned. Lol.

They weren't in the normal pet bit, they were in the separate adoption bit. You don't pay for them in the adoption bit. They'd been returned because the person was bored or something, not health related.

Re: Looking for a young girl
I want to know how these backyard breeders got their hands on Russian Silvers! that dumbo in the first link... and €45?! WHUT?! Unfortunately the other two look like classic crappy back yard breeders... and the rats look woefully thin and little and sickly.

Re: Looking for a young girl
Thanks guys, Antrim is a bit far to travel, I'm almost in Waterford here.
Long trips need some organizing, between the daughter and cats and dogs (and now rat!).
Zoundz, I will be returning your form, I'd love one of your beauties, and it would be good to know they are well bred by someone who cares.
I may call the one with the 4 month old dumbo, up until Luna any rat I got was from friends, no idea of prices. âŹ45 sounds an awful lot for a rat?

Also anything to look out for?
I know to check eyes and ears, and teeth, condition like body weight and feet etc, and that they are tame enough to be handled, just not sure is there anything else.

Re: Looking for a young girl
I'd say 45 is a LOT considering she's obviously not from a reputable breeder. But perhaps if she's on her own and they genuinely want a good home you can talk them down. Often people attach a price to ensure they aren't going as snake food.
I'd check to see if she's happy to come out of the cage on her own, if her ears and eyes are clean and clear, if her fur looks clean, if she's too skinny ie. you can feel her spine and ribs well, if her breathing is noisy.

Re: Looking for a young girl
Ugh. Avoid. We charge €50 a pair and I know we're considered expensive by some but to be honest, if people aren't happy to pay that for a pair, then they're not getting any from me because they're also probably not happy to pay vet bills! it's a token amount anyway and doesn't even begin to cover our costs!
I just wish I had something available now, I don't even have any older retired does I can home out...

Re: Looking for a young girl
Thank you zoundz, I really appreciate your help, I understand your rats are in demand, they are gorgeous
I will keep looking, in the mean time Luna is getting spoiled rotten and gets loads of visitors, one of my friends thought she was a gorgeous little hamster and was petting her and cooing over her, then she saw her tail (she'd been half in my daughters hoody) and was shocked at how cute a rat could be. (I'm working on converting them all to the charm of rats!)
