Hello
I'm brand new to the forum. I picked up my beautiful rattie boy this morning, an 8 month old hairless. I last had rats 4 years ago, so hope I haven't forgotten too much.
This is my first ever hairless pet - so excited! I am trying to leave him alone until this evening, to give him time to settle in - but keep peeking in. He's so handsome - I can't believe I have a hairless rattie
Looking forward to getting to know all the regulars on the forum.

Re: Hello
Hi Smokie,
I agree about the buddy - loved watching my last group of girls together!
I need to explore this a bit. My new boy struggled with his male cagemates as a youngster, and thrived when his second owner (I'm his third) took him as a single rattie. So I'm worried about trying to bond him with a male - but having been thinking about a girlfriend. I need to think about getting her neutured (have great vet, but reluctant to put a hairless under an anesthetic.) Not decided yet - some research still to do. Have never had to bond rats before - my last group were from the same litter.
All advice much apppreciated!

Re: Hello
Hi,
I wouldn't go down the spaying route. Neutering the male would be safer as its less invasive. Not sure whether anesthetic/surgery would be more dangerous for a naked rat but I can't see how it would be. Once the rattie is breathing fine then he should be grand. Probably best to find a younger man rat.

Re: Hello
I agree with Eoghan, neutering is no more dangerous for hairless than any other variety, and spaying is highly invasive and difficult for girls. I would definitely try two young boys though, if you can.
