Litter tray woes! Empty Litter tray woes!

Post by Dangerousbeans Tue Aug 14, 2012 6:00 am

Right, still struggling to stop the girls getting behind the litter tray to toilet, they really can squeeze into the smallest gap, and while they use the tray, they also sometimes go behind it.
This is improving as they grow to big to get behind it, but the latest thing is Luna sleeping and eating in the litter tray!
Anyone else see this?
Anything I can do to discourage it?
Thinking we need more hiding places for her, its just Luna who is the shy one anyway.
Using blankets and towels in bottom of cage, wood shavings for litter trays, and scraps of torn fleece and towel for left lying about for Luna to make the sputniks more comfy.
We have 3 sputniks, a digging box, ropes and ladders, hammocks x3 or 4 at least.
Any suggestions?
Cage is two level explorer so loads of room for two girls and they do use it all, racing about and hiding stuff.

Maybe they prefer sleeping on shavings, you could try using it all over the floor of the cage?

The tray in the explorer is almost flat, tiny lip around edges, so can't have loose bedding.

I did find someone on facebook doing plastic trays with high sides but she stopped doing them as supplies were low on the plastic or something.
Was looking at getting some perspex and diy-ing it, but not sure where to get and lot going on here at the mo.
Also don't think its that she prefers sleeping on shavings as she takes a bit of fleece in there too!

My daughter just keeps saying "she's eating in the toilet again, that can't be hygienic!"

Well she won't see it that way Laugh rats actually consume some of their own poos,in the same way I think rabbits do so it won't harm her in any way,its just our human ideas that make it seem icky
