Chinchillas as pets.

Hi. A friend is looking at buying pet Chinchillas But little is known about them. the information online is very vague. Just wondering if anyone here has had any first hand experience on them?

Yes, lots! We've had them a long time (Karl had them when I met him). They all live with Karl's parents in Leeds now. They live a very long time, do not much like being handled, are very difficult to treat when they get ill (when they get sick, they just give up and die).

Honestly? I would never recommend them as pets unless you are *really* dedicated. As I say, they live a very long time indeed - so you need to know you're well settled and happy for an animal that can and does live longer than a dog. Usually around 15-20 years.
