Re: Luna and Matilda
Well I was begining to think it was me, but my daughter came home and said what happened to Matilda?
She was always a little darker around the head, but now she seems to have developed a hood
I know roans pale as they grow up, but assumed it was all over, here's a pic from yesterday
and an older one to compare
That's only in the space of 3 or 4 weeks, hard to see with the lighting but her rear end is almost white.

I can't claim to be an expert on it, but to my knowledge there are different types of roans and I think roaning happens in different ways in the different types... help me out here guys!
I do know it starts from the tail and the nose and works its way along the body with successive moults. I think it also probably dependfs on how 'good' a roan it is. My boy Ishy has turned out quite patchy

Re: Luna and Matilda
My roans have all got lighter at the back before the front. They pretty much went white from the back up to the front, all pretty evenly. All but 1 have kept some dark hair behind their head, tending to be in a fairly straight line down the back as if hooded but not across the shoulders, and getting shorter and whiter as they aged. My personal experience is that does roan less than bucks, but I don't know if that's a true trend or just what I saw in my litter.
EDIT: Just looked at the pics again, your last one looks exactly how my Schuster went. She's still got a good bit of dark hair around her shoulder area at 18 months.

Re: Luna and Matilda
Rats tend to moult from the underside, up the rump and forwards toward the head. As roans get lighter with each moult you're just seeing the progress of the current moult. I'm seeing a similar thing with my baby rexes.

Re: Luna and Matilda
Thanks guys, wasn't worried just amazed at the change in such a short time.
Those pic's were from my phone so I went and dug out the camera...they tried to eat it!
They stood on it and nibbled it, tried to knock it over, but no way would they keep still.
I'll stick up a couple later.

Re: Luna and Matilda
Anybody want a sweetie?
there was more paper in there but Luna took some to make the sputnik extra comfy, Matilda spent a good 2 hours in there looking for the last bits of food, she really like pumpkin seeds, banana chips and peas, she chucked the cornflakes back.
